Between 2018 and 2020, only 4% of newly developed housing in downtown Oakland was affordable. 121 East 12th Street will introduce 91 affordable homes for very-low- and low-income households (including five apartments for Transition-Aged Youth) at the southeast edge of Lake Merritt.
Five stories of apartments sit on a one-story podium containing vehicle and bike parking, a street-facing community room, resident services offices, and a 400-square-foot retail space at the corner of Second Avenue. A 120-foot-long landscaped courtyard on the project’s northeast side occupies the easement to a forthcoming adjacent affordable housing development. The second floor includes an 800-square-foot south-facing courtyard for residents. The project is within walking distance of the Lake Merritt BART station and several AC Transit bus lines, including Tempo BRT.
