2700 International is a 100% affordable housing project on Oakland’s International Boulevard between 27th Avenue and Mitchell Street. The property was acquired by The Unity Council as part of their strategic development of neighborhood hubs that co-locate and interconnect services.
One- to three-bedroom units, a community room, shared laundry, administrative offices and other support service spaces are located above about 7,500 square feet of flexible storefront commercial space and building parking. Along International, the building is set back to widen the sidewalk for trees and pedestrians. The five upper residential levels frame a shared, 60-foot-wide courtyard connected to resident amenities.
Building cladding incorporates strong vertical elements of richly-textured brick and stucco inspired by neighborhood context and traditional patterns. Art opportunities are incorporated into the transparent corner lobby, storefronts, and raised planters. The building steps down to one story towards the residential neighborhood, transitioning from the commercial corridor. Access to public transit – including several AC Transit lines, Tempo rapid bus, and nearby Fruitvale BART station – allow the project to reduce on-site parking as part of a comprehensive approach to sustainable design.
