In response to an ambitious RFP issued by the City of San Jose, Eden Housing proposed a services- and amenity-rich new home for low-income and very-low-income Transition Aged Youth (TAY) and families. Mesa Terrace is situated at the corner of Gallup & Mesa drives in the Almaden neighborhood, where a commercial district transitions to working-class neighborhoods. At five stories, the project establishes a gateway and landmark for the larger community. The curving corner parcel is celebrated with cascading windows rounding the corner and terminating at a publicly-accessible ground floor community room. By contrast, massing at the southwest corner steps back in deference to the single-family residences next door, creating an upper-level terrace for residents. The second story also includes a terrace-adjoining multipurpose room, laundry facilities, and a media library.
Care has been taken to design a home for a wide range of residents, including young adults coming out of foster care and families, as part of a program reuniting local family groups. Rooftop solar will offset building energy demand. The project also includes infrastructure for electric vehicle charging and a rain garden for stormwater management.
